While visiting Manchester, Vermont in the summer of 2018 I stumbled across Hildene, the estate once owned by Robert Lincoln (son of Abraham Lincoln) and his family. The estate is listed among the historic sites of the United States and features an array of tours, events, and spectacular views of the Green Mountains.

The inaugural Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots Festival was challenged by Mother Nature, but rain and thunderstorms couldn’t dampen the spirit of all the folks who congregated in Manchester, Vermont for a weekend of kindness, connection, creativity, and - of course - really, really good music.

My third trip to the fort was also my first solo traveling experience, an extraordinary three days of community, love, and deep, deep joy. The magic spread from the main-attraction fort stage to the more intimate museum stage, with legendary artists and unknown talents converging amid a backdrop of sunshine and the sea.
Amid the fleeting softness of late-May’s almost-summer, I spent a quietly magical weekend in the Green Mountains of Vermont, meeting a lovely couple who built their home by hand and relishing the great green energy of glorious Gaia (Mother Earth).

Visiting Newport’s illustrious folk fest for the second time cemented the event as my favorite place on earth. As I told the great Bob Boilen after the unforgettable final set: I feel more at home here than in any other place in the wider world.

I first attended the Newport Folk Festival in 2016. The event takes place on Fort Adams just on the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, and across the generations it has played host to some of the most iconic names in music history. For me, it was love at first sight.
